How to Identify a Faulty Torque Converter
Having car problems is one of the most frustrating things that can happen, especially if you don’t know the cause or the solution to your issue. Let’s face it, the cars and trucks of today are sophisticated. The cross engineering of computer and machine have made vehicles complex and expensive to repair. Instead of spending a small fortune on a mechanic or leaving your vehicle’s fate up to the Click and Clack brothers on Car Talk, try cutting out the middle man and identifying the problem yourself.
Due to the strain and performance demands your torque converter endures, issues can occur. However, due to the excellent capabilities and durability of RevMax Performance Torque Converters, this isn’t a common issue for our customers. But, being able to identify torque converter problems is helpful knowledge for any vehicle owner to know.
Three Common Symptoms of a Faulty Torque Converter
So your vehicle isn’t working like it should, but you can’t quite put your finger on the problem. Instead of assuming you need a new transmission or a complete rebuild, check to see if it is your torque converter. It is the less expensive of the two repairs and most repairs can be done in your own garage.
Below are some common symptoms you may be encountering if you have a faulty torque converter.
Lack of Power From the Torque Converter
Your vehicle plays a vital role in converting horsepower to torque. If you find yourself demanding more power from your vehicle but get very little of it, a problematic torque converter could be the problem. In order to get the proper amount of power from the torque converter, you need to allow enough time for the converter pressure to form. If enough pressure isn’t being formed, your torque converter may need to be replaced.
Lagging and Surging
Surging and lagging are words used to describe the inconsistency of your vehicle’s speed. Surging means you are experiencing inconsistent speed and your vehicle speeds up in spurts, and lagging means that you are experiencing sudden loss of speed or power while driving. This could be due to low levels of converter fluid in the day tank, or because air is present in the converter fluid circuit. Either way, your torque converter is having problems with erratic fluid pressure.
Clutch Slippages Resulting in Power Loss
If you’ve noticed that your clutch is slipping, especially after heavy acceleration, you may need a clutch adjustment. When this occurs, the power generated from your motor isn’t being transferred properly to your torque converter due to the master clutch assembly. If it goes untreated for too long, your master clutch assembly will become damaged and will require replacement.
As with any car repair, the key to saving money and avoiding further repairs is fixing problems quickly. Neglecting to do so could cause larger and more expensive problems in the long run.
