Transmissions: Misconceptions Debunked
Automatic transmissions versus manual transmissions, it is an age-old battle. For years, car and truck enthusiasts have debated the advantages of each transmission type, with both sides declaring which is the best. For many drivers, their transmission type is a point of pride.
At RevMax Performance Torque Converters, we obviously lean more towards automatic transmissions. The perks of automatic transmissions, especially RevMax transmissions, are hard to ignore. They provide greater acceleration, strength, torque multiplication and convenience.
We also see some of the points that are made by manual transmission owners. They like the control and enjoyment of shifting gears, but stick shift users are becoming less common. According to automotive reports, just 3.9-percent of all new cars sold from the past year have been manuals. There has to be some reason drivers are trading in their manuals for automatic transmissions.
Three Common Myths about Manual Transmissions
When it comes to automatic and manual transmissions, each side has their points to make. However, some of the reasons manual transmission fans cite for their superiority aren’t exactly true. Below, we debunk three common myths about manual transmissions.
- Manual transmissions have better fuel economy. This may have been true in the past, but due to additional gears and advances, automatics have now caught up in the race for fuel economy. Actually, continuously variable transmissions (CVT) usually conserve more fuel than an automatic or manual.
- Cars with manual transmissions cost less. In most cases this remains true, but recent automotive trends have shown that the two options are similar in price. Examples include most of the BMWs, the 2013 Buick Regal GS and the 2013 Cadillac CTS-V.
- If you’re going to get a sports car, you have to have a manual. While most sports cars come in both options, automatic transmissions still produce better acceleration and top speed. Additionally, the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3, which is considered one of the most elite sports cars, is only available as an automatic.
We can go back-and-forth on which transmission is the best, but we think it all comes down to the driver’s preference. However, if you are going to drive an automatic, we highly suggest you check our selection of torque converters, valve bodies, performance transmissions and transmission upgrades. Our quality is unmatched!
